Abstract:
A combined modal split and assignment model is proposed for modeling passengers’ mode choices in a multimodal transportation network in an economic circle. Generalized travel cost models of highway and railway are established which incorporate the travel time, ticket fare and passenger’s discomfort. The equilibrium conditions of a multimodal transportation network in an economic circle are defined based on characteristics of passenger’s trips between cities. A variational inequality formulation is proposed to express the equilibrium conditions. The streamlined version of a diagonalization algorithm is presented to solve the model. The model and the algorithm are applied to the prediction of the ratios of passengers’ choices of railway and highway for their trips between cities in the Yangtze River Delta economic circle. The numerical results show that the model and the algorithm are effective, which can provide quantitative basis for rationally configuring the multiple traffic modes in an economic circle from the perspective of user optimum.
