Abstract:
In this paper the capillary and orifice-compensated multi-recess hydrostatic journal bearings without circumferential oil groove are studied.Starting with the equation of continuity of flow,through analyzing the characteristics of the bearing with any number of recesses,general formulas for calculating the pressure in each recess,load capacity or stiffness and power loss are derived,to be used in computer operations.The paper shows also the effects of some demensionless design parameters on the characteristics of bearings. With increasing shaft speed of rotation,heat evolution and temperature rise become a critical problem.Consequently,the optimum design with the aid of a computer has been resorted to,under the constraints of maxima load capacity and stiffness for a given recess geometry,with the total power loss as an objective function.In order to solve this problem,the penalty function method is applied to transform a constrained minimization problem into a seguence of unconstrained minimization problems.The optimum solution to the design problem is obtained by using Powell’s method.Both the flow chart and the computer program in FORTRAN are worked out in detail.
