Abstract:
To overcome drawbacks of deterministic method used to calculate length of acceleration lanes on expressways in China, a model for calculating acceleration lane lengths based on a probabilistic method was proposed. Spatio-temporal driving data of 223 passenger cars and 86 trucks were collected on 6 acceleration lanes in Nanjing, China. The vehicular speed and the acceleration were subsequently calculated. Relationship between the vehicular acceleration rate and the speed was proved to be linear-decreasing. Trucks were set as typical vehicles to calculate length of the acceleration lane for its lower acceleration rate. Based on that, the acceleration lane length was calculated by the probabilistic method. Results show that the acceleration lane length calculated by the probabilistic method can fit the realistic driving characteristics better than the deterministic method by current design specifications. Demanding acceleration lane lengths for main lane with design speeds of 100 and 120 km/h is 300 and 430 m.
